Environmental Health
Environmental health is a large part of public health and an important area of health care. Environmental health officers focus on how things in the environment impact health and how diseases and illness related to our environments can be prevented.
Environmental health has an important role in society ensuring:
- we have a healthy environment, including managing the health impacts of climate change
- our hospitals and health services are monitoring and ready to respond to natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other hazards in our environments
- there are laws and regulations to protect the public from environmental health hazards, and they are enforced.
Environmental health focuses on a wide range of factors including air and water quality, food safety, noise pollution, infectious diseases, waste management and the built environment. Environmental health officers and scientists are public health professionals – you can read about other public and population health professions here.
