Role Description:

  • Mental Health Support Workers work with people who are living with mental illness, their families, carers and friends. This involves day-to-day support to help clients meet their individual goals, assisting them to navigate other health services and monitoring their progress.

    Mental Health Support Workers may work with groups and conduct outreach assistance that enables management of daily activities and connection with the local community.

    These workers also help with the development and review of individual recovery plans and provide referral and linkages to other community services.

    This work does not involve counselling or specific mental health treatment, but more general support which is carried out under the guidance of other mental health practitioners.

Where you might work:

  • You can work in a range of settings such within an individual’s home, within a community or mental health support centre, residential or respite facilities, rehabilitation programs, clinical settings, community based non-government organisations or supporting people in their employment.

Personal attributes:

  • You should have excellent listening and communication skills and enjoy working with people.

Salary:

  • Between $15,900 and $94,080 per year, depending on the organisation employed and level of experience based on 75 salaries in Australia.
